Ms. Melissa G. Wallang has done her M.Phil. in Linguistics from JNU and has submitted her Ph.D. thesis to JNU in linguistics. She joined NERIE, Shillong as Lecturer in the year 2006. She specializes in sign linguistics and language education for the deaf. Her academic interests include i) promotion of sign language of the Deaf in North-Eastern States; ii) creating a multi-media dictionary of Shillong Sign Language; iii) inclusive education; iv) second language learning and teaching and minority/tribal languages. Ms. Melissa has also published a book, viz., “Sign Linguistics and Language Education for the Deaf: An Overview of North-East Region” published by Academic Excellence, 2007, xviii, 174 p, figs, ISBN : 81-89901-20-2. She presented a paper on “Phonology of Shillong Sign Language (ShSL) and English Language Teaching” at a seminar entitled “Phonology, Vocabulary, Literature & Culture in Language Teaching in the North East”, NERIE-NCERT, 2008. She has conducted many programs while working at NERIE. She has coordinated the development of following: i) Development of a manual on bridging the gap between home language and school language in the state of Meghalaya, NERIE-NCERT, 2007; ii) Manual of Basic/Children’s Vocabulary in Tribal/Minor Languages of NE States (Meghalaya, Mizoram & Sikkim), NERIE-NCERT, 2008; iii) Instructional material on Sign language for Deaf Education with reference to Indian sign language at the Primary level, NERIE-NCERT, 2009; iv) Manual on Sign Language for Deaf Education at the Secondary Level, NERIE-NCERT, 2011. She was also associated with the Development of Source Book on Learners’ Assessment at Primary Level, NCERT. Ms. Melissa has been associated with research projects entitled “Status Study of Tribal Dialects at Elementary Level under SSA”, NERIE-NCERT and research project of DOL, NCERT entitled “A study on the teaching of English in Government Schools at the Primary Level in India”, an MHRD, project. She has coordinated the training of i) Orientation of special educators of the Hearing Impaired students on Indian Sign Language; ii) Translation on the Section 3.1(Language) of the National Curriculum Framework into Minor/Tribal languages of Mizoram and Nagaland; iii) Training of Teachers on a Linguistic Approach to Teaching of Languages; iv) Orientation of Teachers in NE States in promoting Effective Aural & Oral skills in Second language and Training of teachers on teaching of Languages at the Secondary Level
